Thailand has long been a popular destination for travelers thanks to its spectacular natural beauty, some of the most gorgeous beaches in the world, its warm and friendly people, and of course the fantastic food. The tourist scene in Thailand has come a long way since intrepid travelers arrived here in the sixties and discovered the unspoiled, idyllic beaches. Since then, the tourist industry has become more commercialized and a variety of travelers are being catered to, from backpackers to package tourists to luxury seekers.

Thailand has its own developing yoga scene. Many yogis come to study yoga and deepen their practice in this stunning natural environment. There are many quality yoga schools and centers in Thailand with a reputation for high standards of teaching.

The capital Bangkok has a plethora of yoga schools and studios teaching traditional yoga styles. There are Iyengar and Ashtanga certified teachers running classes here, as well as schools teaching Bikram and Vinyasa yoga. Chiang Mai, the northern capital of Thailand, also has many yoga schools to choose from. The Sivananda yoga ashram is located in Chiang Rai, 800 km (500 miles) north of Bangkok.

The picturesque islands of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan are popular yoga destinations offering a variety of residential and non-residential yoga retreats taught by in-house or guest teachers, as well as yoga teacher training courses. Many of these yoga centers also teach subsidiary subjects like pranayana, meditation, chanting, yogic philosophy and anatomy. Some run retreats all year round, though most only open during the peak tourist season.

The best time to go to Thailand is during the sunny, dry months from November to March. Most people avoid visiting during the rainy season from June to October, while others swear that this is the most magical time to be in Thailand.
