Maya is first and foremost a luxury five suite villa, quietly hidden in the island's lush southern interior. It is an exquisitely executed restoration of a Sri Lankan Manor House from the late 19th century and stylistically, it pays homage to its Dutch and British period features whilst seamlessly blending its new contemporary interiors and original design accents. It opened in 2010 as a boutique hotel founded by two old school friends, one of them being the owner of Ashtanga sanctuary Purple Valley in India, who fell in love with the property and decided to refurbish the relict. The beauty of the location lending itself well to meditation and yoga, it is now host to some very exclusive Ashtanga yoga retreats. These are small group (maximum 10 people), intimate and high quality retreats, for those who wish to experience Ashtanga yoga in a traditional, unique way. Classes are conducted in the new yoga pavilion situated at the edge of the paddy fields which provides a stunning backdrop for meditation.

Maya certainly has a sanctuary type of feel to it: there is so much space to relax, meditate or soak in the atmosphere. One feels calm, undisturbed and very much at ease within the expansive landscaped gardens, and beyond that, the paddy fields. The fact that the villa only has 5 suites makes the whole place yet more luxurious.

Each room has custom designed fittings and furnishings which merge contemporary luxury and traditional style. The king-sized beds have deep, comfortable mattresses, (and for those sharing, an additional deluxe bed is brought in), stylish cushions provide soothing comfort and key features include high ceilings, elegant fittings and large luxury bathrooms.

The teachers on schedule are all authorized or certified by KPJAYI (the 'source' of Ashtanga Yoga in Mysore, India), so one is certain to learn in a traditional, thorough manner. To mention a couple of names: teachers such as Tarik Thami (certfied Ashtanga Yoga teacher from Tokyo) and Sarai Harvey-Smith (level 2 authorized teacher from London) have paid their visits to Maya. The retreats run for 10days/12 nights and are scheduled at specific times each year (September/October, May/June). There are 10 morning classes (Mysore style self practice) and 5 afternoon sessions, with the content varying according to the teachers. Courses are open to all levels and abilities.
Ashtanga Yoga Retreats run at specific times throughout the year. Alternatively, you can have a tailored Yoga & Well-being program organized at Maya. It involves daily yoga and/or tai-chi classes with senior teacher, Mahesh Kodikara (30 years + experience), meditation, massages and a specially designed retreat to suit one's needs and schedule. The Yoga & Well-being program takes place all year round (except in Peak season).

During free time, students can enjoy quiet moments by the pool, watch sunset over the paddy fields, relax in a hammock or simply rest in one of the luxury suites. A stroll to the local village temples is also a wonderful way to soak up the sacred atmosphere.

Food is also a highlight at Maya, with all meals cooked fresh, with local ingredients by their reputable chef, and vegetarian options are available.

Everything at Maya is tailored to fit guests' needs: from the yoga classes, additional treatments, food and excursions. One can do as little or as much as one desires.
This is a bit like a semi-private yoga retreat, so the slightly higher cost only seems justified by the quality of teaching and living.
