Yoga in India: Our top choices
» Here is our selection of the best yoga retreats, yoga holidays and yoga teacher trainings in India «
India’s diverse landscape, people and traditions make it one of the world’s most fascinating destinations, which many travelers keep returning to. For the serious yoga student, a trip to India is full of symbolic meaning and a must-do: this is the birthplace of yoga after all. Many yoga enthusiasts from all over the world come here to deepen their practice and study directly from renowned yoga gurus and teachers.
Yoga is very much a part of life in India. Many Indians start practicing yoga from a young age and many schools have yoga integrated into the curriculum. Yoga schools are located in every city and town across the country, teaching a variety of different styles and often offering intensive yoga teacher training programs. Yoga ashrams are popular with those looking for a long residential retreat. Often located in secluded areas of natural beauty, they offer the ideal setting for spiritual growth. Rishikesh in the North Indian state of Uttarakhand probably has the highest number of yoga ashrams in the country. Mysore in Karnataka, South India, is the destination for serious Ashtanga practitioners – this is where Pattabhi Jois’ son Sharath continues his father’s legacy. Goa has become the preferred destination for yogis who like to hit the beach after asana class. Committed students of Iyengar yoga flock to Pune to study with the Iyengar family who teach under the watchful eye of BKS Iyengar himself.
Most visitors to India come between the months of November and March. This is when the weather is generally dry and pleasant, though it can get quite cold in North India in January and February. April and May are the hottest months. The monsoon runs from June to September and covers most of India during this time. Tamil Nadu usually gets rain only in November and December.
